CONGRESS SHOULD CODIFY ABORTION ACCESS TODAY, THEN MOVE SWIFTLY TO EXPAND SUPREME COURT

Both are essential to save Roe

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 11, 2022) — Today, the Senate will vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), which would codify the right to abortion into federal law. Following a leaked draft Supreme Court opinion last week showing that the Court’s right-wing majority is poised to cut off abortion access for millions of Americans by overturning Roe v. Wade, the need to federally protect abortion rights is all the more urgent. In anticipation of the vote, Take Back the Court Action Fund Executive Director Sarah Lipton-Lubet encouraged lawmakers to codify the right to access abortion:

“It is critical that Congress do its job today and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to safeguard people’s fundamental right to abortion. Lives are at stake — and there’s no time to waste. Lawmakers must codify the fundamental right to abortion into law, and then move swiftly to pass the Judiciary Act of 2021 and expand the Supreme Court to safeguard our fundamental rights from the current stolen right-wing Court. It’s not too late to stop the Court from undermining justice and democracy, but our window is closing. It’s up to senators today to fight for the American public.”
