NEW: MAJORITY OF AMERICANS SUPPORT EXPANDING SUPREME COURT
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 22, 2022) — For the first time ever, the Marquette University Law School Poll — the leading surveyor of public opinion around the Supreme Court and its doings — found that a majority of Americans (51%) support expanding the Court. And the coalition is broad; adding justices was favored by:
60+% of Americans aged 18-44
72% of Democrats
51% of Independents
60% of women
63% of Black individuals and 61% of Hispanic individuals
The poll follows additional Marquette University findings from July showing that a striking 61% of Americans disapprove of how the Supreme Court is handling its job, as well as an August Gallup poll showing that Democrats’ approval of the Court has sunk to a record low of 13%.
In response to the findings, Take Back the Court Action Fund released the following statement on behalf of its executive director, Sarah Lipton-Lubet:
“Americans roundly rejected a second Trump term in 2020, and they’re not going to sit back and let the Supreme Court’s right-wing justices enact his agenda from the bench. This stolen Court is woefully out of step with the interests of the American public. As it continues to go after our most cherished rights and freedoms, people understand that adding new justices to rebalance the Court is the only real solution. Congressional leaders, take note: Americans want to expand the Court. It’s time to get it done.”
