NEW VIDEO: WHY JUSTICE CLARENCE THOMAS SHOULD RESIGN

Video released ahead of Wednesday Supreme Court Ethics Subcommittee Hearing; Has already garnered over 20K views

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (April 25, 2022) — In a new editorial video for NowThis, Take Back the Court Executive Director Sarah Lipton-Lubet lays out the case for why Justice Clarence Thomas should resign following his failure to recuse himself from cases related to the January 6 insurrection and 2020 election. The video comes in advance of a House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee hearing this Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET focused on “Building Confidence in the Supreme Court Through Ethics and Recusal Reforms.”

Confidence in the Court is at an all time low: According to a November 2021 Quinnipiac Poll, a bipartisan majority of Democrats and Republicans overwhelmingly believe the Supreme Court is motivated by politics, not upholding the Constitution. And that was before we learned that Justice Thomas weighed in on cases related to the insurrection and 2020 election — despite the obvious conflict of interest with his wife’s involvement. It’s clear that there is an urgent need to reform the Court to restore any faith in the institution.

“Supreme Court justices are not supposed to hear cases in which their ‘impartiality might reasonably be questioned,’ or in which their spouse has ‘an interest that could be substantially affected by the outcome of the proceeding,’” Lipton-Lubet explains. “The conflict here could not be more obvious.”
