**STATEMENT FROM AARON BELKIN ON NEW YORK STATE RIFLE ORAL ARGUMENTS**

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (December 2, 20190—The following statement can be attributed to Take Back the Court Director Aaron Belkin. Take Back the Court plans to release new research next month showing that the Supreme Court is likely to continue to obstruct gun safety reform by burdening reasonable laws and regulations with the threat of fatal litigation.

“While it is impossible to know the outcome of New York State Rifle in advance, the Court’s conservatives now have the votes they need to create a deeply chilling effect on Congress and on cities and states contemplating new gun safety reforms. Former Justice Kennedy signed onto a dramatic expansion of the 2nd Amendment, and his replacement, Justice Kavanaugh, appears eager to place new obstacles in the way of gun safety advocates. If Presidential candidates truly want to get something done on guns, they must have a plan to reform the Court.”

Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new progressive legislation. Court expansion is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy and that can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment.
