OUT-OF-TOUCH COURT RULES THAT 40+ MILLION AMERICANS MUST CONTINUE SUFFOCATING UNDER WEIGHT OF STUDENT DEBT
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (June 30, 2023) — Today, the Supreme Court’s right-wing supermajority blocked President Biden’s student loan relief plan, denying the more than 40 million student borrowers the plan would’ve helped the relief they desperately need. The ruling in Biden v. Nebraska is the latest move by the Court to overstep and trample President Biden’s executive authority when his actions don’t align with the right-wing supermajority’s agenda.
“Apparently, the right-wing supermajority thinks crushing student debt is a fitting punishment for the high crime of pursuing an education without a trust fund or a billionaire benefactor like Harlan Crow,” said Take Back the Court President Sarah Lipton-Lubet. “Each year, the price tag on a college degree increases and these justices grow more out of touch with students’ experiences. When these nine justices were in school, tuition cost a fraction of what students are asked to pay at those same elite institutions today. And yet they want to be the final authority on whether millions of student borrowers get the relief they desperately need? It would be funny if it weren’t so cruel.
“There’s only one way we’ll get a Supreme Court that reflects and respects the experiences of hard working Americans: by adding four new justices.”
