COURT’S FAILURE TO AGREE ON ETHICS CODE UNDERSCORES NEED FOR ACCOUNTABILITY

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (February 9, 2022) — Following a recent spate of ethics scandals at the Supreme Court, new reports revealed that the justices discussed imposing an ethics code for at least four years, but couldn’t reach a consensus. Take Back the Court Action Fund released the following statement on behalf of its president, Sarah Lipton-Lubet, in response to the news:

“It’s no surprise that the justices weren’t able to reach consensus on an ethics code when some of them see corruption and misconduct as part of their job description. A code of conduct is the least the Court could do to restore some integrity to the institution, and even that is a bridge too far for the right-wing justices. This is exactly why Congress needs to step up and hold this rogue Court accountable — and another glaring example of the urgent need to expand the Court.”

Take Back the Court just launched the Supreme Court Accountability Project — an effort to shine a spotlight on the myriad conflicts of interest, political activities, and other ethical transgressions and potentially corrupt behaviors committed by Supreme Court justices.
