GUESS WHO HELPED JUSTICE THOMAS BUY HIS FANCY R.V.?

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (August 5, 2023) — Today, a New York Times report revealed that a luxury R.V. Justice Clarence Thomas purchased in 1999 was funded at least in part by Anthony Welters — one of Thomas’ wealthy friends. According to the Times, it is unclear whether Thomas ever paid Welters back for his contribution to the purchase. Take Back the Court Action Fund released the following statement on behalf of its president, Sarah Lipton-Lubet, in response to the news:

“With friends like these, who needs ethics? The right-wing justices’ opposition to ethics reform is no surprise when they’ve enjoyed almost every mode of luxury transportation imaginable on their wealthy friends’ dimes. We shouldn’t have to wait for 20 years to learn about the significant financial entanglements between America’s most powerful judges and its wealthiest business owners. To hear Thomas and Alito tell it, they deserve to rule over the country as an unaccountable super-legislature and we don’t even deserve to know who they owe big favors. It’s enough. Senate Democrats need to investigate them both immediately.”
