JOHNSON SAYS QUIET PART OUT LOUD ABOUT SUPREME COURT’S POLITICIZATION
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 31, 2024) – Today, House Speaker Mike Johnson alluded to conversations he had with Supreme Court justices about Donald Trump’s felony convictions, saying there are justices who are “deeply concerned about” the rulings — and that he believes the court will “set this straight." This comes as the court considers a case related to Trump’s immunity from prosecution from official acts done while in office. In response, Take Back the Court Action Fund released the following statement on behalf of its president, Sarah Lipton-Lubet:
“Mike Johnson said the quiet part out loud. Republicans like to pretend the court they stole isn’t politicized until, apparently, they need the justices to intervene for their explicit political benefit. Chief Justice Roberts says he won’t meet with senators about obvious ethics violations because of ‘separation of powers,’ but his justices are talking politics in the House Speaker’s DMs. It’s a clear double standard, and one that should embarrass a chief justice who wants so badly for his out-of-control court to appear impartial. The only ‘separation of powers’ the conservative justices care about is preventing Republicans from being separated from power.”
