REP. KATIE PORTER ENDORSES SUPREME COURT EXPANSION

With Porter joining Lee and Schiff, all leading CA Senate candidates support expansion

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (March 17, 2022) — U.S. Representative Katie Porter (CA-47), who is running for California’s open U.S. Senate Seat in 2024, is the latest Congressional leader to endorse Supreme Court expansion.

Speaking to students at University of California Davis this week, Porter was asked what she thinks about expanding the Supreme Court. “We should expand it,” Porter says in a video emailed to supporters by her Senate campaign. “Right now, our Supreme Court doesn’t just lean conservative, it’s corrupt. The Court is only taking up cases that further an agenda being pushed by a handful of corporations and Republican mega-donors.”

With Representatives Barbara Lee (CA-12) and Adam Schiff (CA-30) already signed on, Porter’s announcement means that all three leading candidates in the California Senate primary support Court expansion.

“All of the leading candidates for California’s Senate have endorsed expanding the Supreme Court,” said Sarah Lipton-Lubet, president of Take Back the Court Action Fund. “That’s a huge testament to both how far our movement has come and how completely the Court has shredded its credibility.”

Take Back the Court began advocating for Supreme Court expansion in October 2018, well before it was a feature of the mainstream national political conversation. Today, more than 60 members of Congress and more than 130 advocacy organizations support expansion.
