RIGHT-WING SUPREME COURT COULD THREATEN CFPB’S EXISTENCE

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 29, 2023) – On Tuesday, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) v. Community Financial Services Association (CFSA) — a case that could threaten the very existence of the CFPB, and put other government programs whose funds are not allocated through annual congressional appropriations, including Social Security, Medicare, the USPS, and the U.S. Mint, at risk.

“As inflation continues to destabilize families and makes it harder for people to put food on the table, the Supreme Court is hearing a case that threatens essential parts of our social safety net — and could even invite a second Great Depression,” said Sarah Lipton-Lubet, president of Take Back the Court. “This case is more than just a chance for the pro-corporate Court to give another handout to exploitative payday lenders and throw consumers under the bus; it offers the right-wing supermajority a chance to undermine our government’s very ability to provide basic services and support for the American people. These anti-consumer justices are never going to stop their attacks on our governing system. We have to expand the Court.”
