Take Back the Court Statement on First Day of New Supreme Court Term
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 4, 2021) — Take Back the Court Director Sarah Lipton-Lubet today released the following statement regarding the start of the new Supreme Court term.
“While the Supreme Court’s right-wing majority never took a break this summer from their assault on Americans’ rights, today kicks off a new term and a new chance to further shred the delicate fabric of our democracy. The stakes could not be higher — including direct challenges to Roe v. Wade, anti-discrimination laws, separation of church and state, and policies that curb gun violence. Buckle up for more egregious, harmful rulings and lopsided judicial review unless we start fighting back.
“Today would be a very good day for more members of Congress to join the 37 sponsors of the Judiciary Act. The only way to prevent the Court from further weaponizing the bench as a political battering ram is to expand the Court.”
Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new legislation. Court expansion, which can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment, is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy.
