TAKE BACK THE COURT STATEMENT ON SCOTUS TAKING UP ALABAMA REDISTRICTING CASE

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (February 7, 2022) — Take Back the Court Director Sarah Lipton-Lubet today issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to block a lower court order that required Alabama to redraw its congressional map.

“The stolen Supreme Court again proves itself eager to erode voting rights and further the right wing’s anti-democratic agenda. Piece by piece, the right wing justices are dismantling voting rights protections that are essential to democracy.

”The conservative justices like to profess their independence, but each week they seem to provide more evidence that the only things separating them from Mitch McConnell are a robe and a gavel. The only way to restore balance and integrity to the bench and preserve a true democracy is to expand the Supreme Court.”

Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new legislation. Court expansion, which can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment, is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy.
