TODAY AT 1PM: TAKE BACK THE COURT TO PROTEST FINAL COURT COMMISSION MEETING, CALL FOR EXPANSION

As stolen court decimates abortion rights, Commission response is inadequate and insulting

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (December 7, 2021) — REMINDER – TODAY at 1:00pm ET, Take Back the Court and other activists will unfurl a protest banner in front of the White House calling on President Biden to support Supreme Court expansion. The banner will highlight the numerous damaging blows the Court has dealt to American democracy since the inception of the Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court. The banner is designed to highlight the insult of responding to these blows with nothing but a research paper.

“As a Texan and son of immigrants, I know firsthand how dangerous the Supreme Court’s assault on our rights and institutions is for our democracy — look no further than the Court’s decision to resurrect Trump’s ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy,” said Take Back the Court Digital Manager Obet Montalvo. “That’s why I’m traveling from Houston to the White House: to elevate the dire need for Court expansion and underscore everything this Court has done to hurt the most vulnerable among us since the Commission was formed.”

“Last week, Brett Kavanaugh and the rest of the out-of-touch right-wing Court majority made it crystal clear that they’re eager to decimate abortion rights in America,” said Take Back the Court Executive Director Sarah Lipton-Lubet. “And the Biden Administration’s response is a light update of their research paper? It’s wildly inadequate and, frankly, insulting.”

The Presidential Commission was established on April 9, 2021. Since then, the Commission wrote a report with no action steps. In that very same time, the stolen Court has gutted the Voting Rights Act, effectively outlawed abortion in Texas, heard arguments in a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade, blocked President Biden’s eviction moratorium, reinstated Donald Trump’s cruel and inhumane ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy, curtailed workers’ rights to organize, eroded government transparency by ruling in favor of a Koch-backed dark money group, and heard a case that would obliterate state and local gun safety regulations.
