Take Back the Court Executive Director: “Remember there is no such thing as a compromise here”
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (November 30, 2021) — Tomorrow, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the case addressing Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban. Ahead of this hearing, Take Back the Court Executive Director Sarah Lipton-Lubet issued the following statement:
“As you listen to the justices tomorrow, please remember: There is no such thing as a compromise here. If this stolen Court upholds Mississippi’s abortion ban in any way, they will have gutted the central holding of Roe and ended abortion rights as we know them. Anything less than recognizing that this law is ‘flagrantly unconstitutional’ is not moderation — the Supreme Court will have handed over control of our bodies, our dreams, and our futures to anti-abortion politicians.
“Let’s call this case out for what it is: The culmination of Republicans’ decades-long fight to end safe and legal abortion. It is about power — about who has the power to choose to make decisions and who has decisions made for them, the impact of which will disproportionately harm Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities, people with disabilities, people in rural areas, young people, immigrants, and those having trouble making ends meet.
“The fight for abortion access must include the fight for Court expansion — we need legislation to ensure pregnant people can make their own health decisions, and we need to expand the Court so six hyper-partisan conservative justices can’t undo that progress.”
Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new legislation. Court expansion, which can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment, is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy.
