TAKE BACK THE COURT STATEMENT ON NOMINATION OF KETANJI BROWN JACKSON TO THE SUPREME COURT

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (February 25, 2022) — President Joe Biden today announced his nomination of current federal appeals court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. Take Back the Court Action Fund released the following statement on behalf of its executive director, Sarah Lipton-Lubet:

“President Biden has made an outstanding choice in nominating Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson who, once confirmed, will be the first Black woman to hold a seat on the Supreme Court. Judge Jackson boasts an impressive background as a public defender that, if confirmed, would make her the first justice with criminal defense experience since Thurgood Marshall. It’s clear from Judge Jackson’s record that she is a true and fierce advocate for all people — not just the rich and powerful who have so benefitted from the Court’s current 6-3 right-wing majority. With Jackson on the bench, we will be one crucial step closer to a Court that looks more like America, and can thus truly represent the breadth and depth of the American populace.

“The Senate must move swiftly to confirm Judge Jackson so our nation’s highest judicial authority, and by extension, the public, can begin to benefit from her invaluable perspective.

“In the 232 years since the Court’s establishment, America has seen 115 Supreme Court justices, 45 different presidents, and zero Black women on the Court. But after countless hours of advocacy — primarily by Black- and Brown-led groups — we are finally building a more representative Supreme Court. With reproductive rights, climate action, and the future of our democracy all on the line, there is no better time for Judge Jackson to make her voice heard on the Court.”
