TEXAS OPINION MAKES CLEAR: WE MUST EXPAND THE COURT TO PROTECT ABORTION RIGHTS

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (January 20, 2022) — Just two days before the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, six conservative justices on the Supreme Court once again showed their determination to destory the right to abortion with their cruel refusal to return the Texas abortion ban to federal district court.

Take Back the Court Action Fund Executive Director Sarah Lipton-Lubet released the following statement:

“Let’s be very clear about what is happening here: Six unelected, hyperconservative justices on a stolen Court are eviscerating our fundamental right to abortion — a right supported by 8 in 10 people in this country. They are continuing to allow the abortion ban in Texas to persist, causing irreparable harm to pregnant Texans every day. And they are gearing up use Mississippi’s cruel and extreme anti-abortion law to eviscerate Roe completely, tearing up half a century of precedent in the process — the impact of which will disproportionately harm Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities, people with disabilities, people in rural areas, young people, immigrants, and those having trouble making ends meet.
“Roe isn’t perfect, but make no mistake: it is essential. This ruling almost 49 years ago to the day revolutionized what it means to be a woman in this country — and today’s decision sends another very clear message that this right is gone if we don’t do something about the Court.
“I don’t want to look back on this moment and ask, Why didn’t we act? Why did we treat the Court as untouchable? That doesn’t have to be our story. Fifty members of Congress have stood up to take action, endorsing the Judiciary Act to add four seats to the Court. Now is the time for everyone else who cares about women and pregnant people to hurry up and get on board.”
