WYDEN BILL IS LATEST SIGN OF MOMENTUM FOR COURT REFORM
NATIONWIDE (September 26, 2024) – Today, U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) introduced the Judicial Modernization and Transparency Act. The bill would, among other provisions, expand the Supreme Court, rein in the Court’s ability to rewrite legislation from the bench, reform the confirmation process for justices, and require enhanced transparency to combat corruption. Take Back the Court Action Fund released the following statement on behalf of its president, Sarah Lipton-Lubet, in response to the news:
“Every day it becomes clearer that the Supreme Court is broken, and only significant, structural reform will fix it. We commend Senator Wyden on recognizing that the court poses a clear and present danger to American democracy and on proposing a substantive reform package that reins in the court’s increasing overreach, addresses basic judicial ethics, and begins to reverse Republican court packing by adding seats to the bench. Momentum for court reform is growing rapidly — I hope it’s rapid enough.”
