SUPREME COURT LIKELY TO STRIKE DOWN NEW CLIMATE LAWS
The next president must fight climate change, but what will they do to prevent John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, and the conservatives on the Supreme Court from striking down new climate laws?
Mitch McConnell and the Republicans spent decades -- backed by hundreds of millions of dollars -- to control the federal courts and put in place judges and justices who would advance the interests of billionaires and corporations. That's why they refused to let Barack Obama fill an open seat on the Supreme Court, the first time this has happened in modern American history. Thanks to the GOP's theft of the Court, Kavanaugh & Company are in position to strike down any significant climate policy for years to come.
A new report by Take Back The Court explains that the John Roberts Supreme Court is likely to strike down any major climate change legislation -- just like McConnell and the conservatives planned when they manipulated the size of the court in a blatant power grab. By keeping the Supreme Court at 8 justices for over a year, they ensured that only a Republican president got to pick the 9th Justice and lock in an illegitimate Republican majority on the Court. The climate crisis requires immediate action -- but if a rigged Supreme Court stops us from acting based on radical and flimsy pretexts, it could cost us decades.
There’s a clear solution to this un-democratic rigging of the Supreme Court: Expanding its size and adding new justices to offset partisan machinations and make the Supreme Court more representative of the American people.
"A new study concludes that...even if Democrats win the White House and Congress, the high court will likely strike down much of what they do to address the climate change crisis..."
